Twin Rivers Curling Club named CURLSASK High Performance Centre

May 29, 2018 | 11:00 AM

With the temperatures hovering near 30°C it may be difficult for some to even think about curling, but that’s not the case at the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford.

Officials with the Twin Rivers facility announced a new partnership with CURLSASK in hopes of building a strong summer curling ice program. Ashley Howard, CURLSASK’s executive director, couldn’t be more pleased.

“We had some great conversations with the Twin Rivers Curling Club while we were in North Battleford for the Sask. Winter Games, but nothing was finalized at that time,” Howard said. “We are very fortunate that the board of directors and the City of North Battleford will be partnering with us in this endeavour.”

The partnership will see the Twin Rivers Curling Club host a number of events this year including the first-ever Saskatchewan Mixed Doubles event and the province’s first-ever Junior Curling Slam.

“This partnership is a great step forward in Saskatchewan high-performance curling,” Howard said. “It will also allow our athletes to train with the best conditions, coaches and equipment here at home without having to leave the province.”

Traditionally the ice surfaces are not used at the Twin Rivers Curling Club until early fall, however, with this new parnership the ice will be available Aug. 18.

As another perk of the partnership, the Academy of Curling will host a skills development clinic in October featuring two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist Russ Howard.

“I may be a bit biased because he is my dad,” Howard said, “but when you have a storied résumé like his, who better to run a skills clinic than Russ Howard?”
