Wayne Pruden Golf Tournament to benefit BUH mammography unit

Another full field of golfers will hit the links at the North Battleford Golf & Country Club June 4 for the 22nd annual Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament.

Since its inception in 1997, the event has served as a fundraiser for the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation and as a lasting tribute to a well-respected and much-loved community leader and volunteer. The tournament has hosted golfers from as far away as Alberta and Winnipeg.

Hospital Foundation Executive Director Claudette McGuire said funds raised at this year’s tournament will go towards a new mammography unit for medical imaging at the hospital.

“The current mammogram unit is over 10 years old and needs to be replaced,” McGuire said. “Every year there are at least 2,000 mammograms completed in medical imaging, so we need to ensure we have access to the very best equipment.”

Hospital Foundation Chair Jay Crockett said this year’s tournament is expected to sell out once again.

“Many of the golfers and volunteers that will be participating in this year’s tournament were part of the very first event in 1997, including Wayne’s children, members of his family, and his many friends,” Crockett said. “The support we receive year after year remains enthusiastic, and because of this our fundraising objectives have always been successful.”

Crockett thanked Innovation Credit Union for once again stepping up as the master sponsor of the event. Chad Gartner, regional vice-president of the credit union, said the company is proud to have been associated with the memorial tournament from the beginning.

“I want to applaud the organizers who make this golf tournament the success it has been,” Gartner said. “I also want to commend the golfers who come out year after year and contribute to improving healthcare in the Battlefords.”

In its previous 21 years, the Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament has raised almost $450,000 for the BUH Foundation, enabling the purchase of new equipment such as a dental x-ray machine, a tub chair bath, monitors, microscopes and diagnostic equipment.
