‘He put me through hell:’ Woman accused of Sutherland murder

The woman accused of an Easter Sunday murder in Saskatoon says she “won’t accept” the charges against her.

Sheritta Kahpeaysewat, 30, appeared in provincial court via video Thursday morning, three days after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Colin Sutherland.

The court date was initially meant to address when Kahpeaysewat would appear next, but she interrupted proceedings to voice her feelings about being charged.

“I will not stand for this,” she said. “I won’t let them make a fool of me.”

Family of Sutherland and friends said Kahpeaysewat had been in a relationship with the Beardy’s and Okemasis man at the time of his death.

During her interruption, Kahpeaysewat said Sutherland “put me through hell since high school, and his family knows about it.”

Sutherland was found dead by Saskatoon police after they received a call around 11:30 p.m. about an injured man in a 5th Avenue apartment.

He was a recently-retired principal, credited with helping establish North Battleford’s Sakewew High School in 2002.

Kahpeaysewat hasn’t entered a plea in the case, but maintained “I don’t have a criminal record” during Thursday’s hearing.

Sutherland’s family was visibly upset by the woman’s outburst, leaving the courtroom in tears and hugging each other.

Kahpeaysewat is due back in court April 11.
