Town looking to expand cemetery

Mar 14, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The Town of Battleford is making preparations to expand the Battleford Cemetery.

Mayor Ames Leslie said it became apparent more space was needed when an upgrade was done to the cemetery last year. Council gave its approval to move forward at their most recent council meeting. Before work to alter the boundaries at the cemetery can begin, however, the town must submit a request to the Registrar of Cemeteries and provide a copy of the resolution from council indicating they approve of the expansion.

“This is just a resolution, in part for us to go forward to the Ministry to apply to expand the cemetery,” the mayor said.

Parks and Recreation Director Jordan Schechtel said the town purchased some land to the south of the cemetery in 2015, which could be used for future expansion of the cemetery with the aim to extend the site’s useful life.
