Senior hockey semifinal playoff series underway

Feb 26, 2018 | 11:00 AM

After all four top seeds advanced to the second round of the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League playoffs, some close games in the semifinals were bound to happen.

That’s exactly what happened this past weekend, as there were three separate one-goal games, two between the top-seeded Hafford Hawks and fourth-ranked Battleford Beaver Blues, and one between the Meota Combines and Edam Three Stars.

The Blues won game one and game two against Hafford by identical 4-3 scores, pulling out a road win in game one thanks to four assists from Mike George, and winning 4-3 at home on Saturday thanks to six combined points from the top line of George, Cody Danberg, and Brent Salzl.

Game three of that series is set for Wednesday in Hafford at 8 p.m., where a Blues win will clinch the series and catapult them into the league finals.

In the other semi, Meota edged Edam 4-3 thanks to a four-point night from Michael Pylypow and a three-point game from Blake Tatchell. The Combines lead the best-of-5 series 1-0 now, with game two set for Monday, Feb. 26 in Edam at 8:30 p.m. and game three set for Wendesday at the Civic Centre.

Sask West Hockey League

In the SWHL, the Wilkie Outlaws are one win away from returning to the league finals for the fourth straight season.

They defeated the Unity Miners 6-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two this past Friday to take a commanding 2-0 series lead in the best-of-five series.

Wilkie will look to pull off the sweep at home on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The other semifinal series has the Macklin Mohawks leading the Kindersley Red Lions 2-1, thanks to 4-3 and 6-3 wins last week.

This past Saturday, Kindersley won 5-2 in game three to cut the series lead to one game. Game four is set for Wednesday in Kindersley at 8:30 p.m.

Senior Provincials

The Wilkie Outlaws weren’t just playing the SWHL semifinals this past weekend, as they also opened up their second-round provincial matchup against Hague in the ‘A’ bracket on Saturday.

Wilkie won 4-2 and now leads 1-0 in the best-of-3 series. Game two is set for Friday, March 2 in Hague and game three, if necessary is set for Saturday, March 3 in Wilkie.

The Hafford Hawks are taking on the Kerrobert Tigers in the ‘C’ provincials, where Kerrobert has an early lead thanks to a 7-5 win. The final game in the best-of-two series is set for Saturday, March 3 in Hafford at 6:30 p.m.

In the ‘D’ bracket, the Edam Three Stars took game one from Luseland by a 6-3 score, with the final game set for Sunday, March 4 in Luseland at 5 p.m.
