Boushie supporters gather as jury prepares to deliberate

Feb 8, 2018 | 1:41 PM

Grades 7 and 8 students from Thunderchild First Nation participated in support of Colten Boushie outside the Battleford courthouse Thursday.

Inside, Gerald Stanley is currently facing a charge of second degree murder in the August of 2016 fatal shooting of Colten Boushie.

“We’re representing our class, our school our reserve, our families,” teacher Leah Arcand said. “We’re here to show support for Colten Boushie’s family.”

The students carried plackards while standing outside court during the lunchtime break. Arcand said she hoped by participating in the rally the students will learn about the justice system.

Two groups of Boushie family supporters from Regina – Colonialism No More and The Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism – staged a separate rally before court this morning.

“[The Boushie] family needs support. They are the ones who lost their loved one,” Robyn Pitawanakwat said.

She said people are coming from all over Saskatchewan to show support for the Stanley family, and her group wanted to do the same for Boushie’s family.
