Silvernagle splits opening day at Scotties

A slow start to day one of the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts was erased by the final shot of the night for Robyn Silvernagle.

The North Battleford rink was downed 8-5 in draw one of the provincial women’s curling championship by Chantelle Eberle of Regina Tuesday afternoon. In draw two, Silvernagle rebounded with an extra-end 4-3 win over Penny Barker in a rematch of last year’s final.

“It was definitely a bit of struggle to start but we figured out the ice,” she said. “We used game one as a learning experience since we didn’t get the win.”

The night draw was much tighter defensively, Silvernagle held a 3-0 lead into the seventh end. Barker scored once in the seventh pulling within two. After a blank end in eight Barker stole a single in both the ninth and 10th ends to force an extra-end. Facing a pair of Barker stones, Silvernagle delivered a perfect tap on the button sealing the rink’s first win of the nine-team championship. She said it felt good to salvage the opening day.
