Sask Games committee looking for more volunteers

Dec 27, 2017 | 4:00 PM

The Saskatchewan Winter Games committee is putting the call out for more volunteers to sign up to help with the big event coming to North Battleford in just over a month from now.

The committee currently has about 400 volunteers fully registered. It hopes to get a total of 1,200 people signed up to volunteer.

“That will be a major push starting now and into the New Year, and all the way up to the Games,” Games Committee Co-Chair Rob Rongve said on Wednesday.

“We know the vast majority of people will be signing up through January and February,” he said. “If you’ve been thinking of signing up, we definitely need lots more… We want to make sure everything within the community is delivered very well, that we pull off the Games in a great fashion, and we want everybody to think very highly of our great community by the time the Games are over.”

Rongve said the more volunteers in place for the Games the greater chance the event will be a complete success.

Otherwise just about everything else is on track in getting ready to hold the event, although a little more snow would help.

Tickets are already for sale online for people wanting to attend the Games competitions, and opening and closing ceremonies.

When eyeing fundraising efforts, Rongve said many of the sponsor donations made an impact.

“We’ve had some very community-minded agencies and businesses stepping up,” he said. “It’s been a phenomenal success.”

The Winter Games legacy monument is now installed outside at the Rotary Plaza, at the Credit Union CUplex and will display all the levels of sponsorship donors from supporters of the event.

Rongve said the Games’ organizing committee is close to reaching its fundraising goal of about $700,000 to host the event in the region, based on support from fundraising, donations and sponsor contributions.

He said some of the costs for the various needs are exceeding budget however so the committee is still looking for sponsor money.

“We know there is quite a bit yet to come,” Rongve said. “We’ve talked to businesses and individuals that want to help out. I think we’ll be in very good shape come the Games time, but we’re definitely needing as much financial support still as we can get.”

The co-chair said every extra bit of support will help with the Games, and will add to the athletes’ experiences, as well as the needs of families and tourists coming to see the event.

The Saskatchewan Winter Games takes place from February 18 to 24. About 1,800 athletes from across the province will be competing in 17 sports during the event.
