One of the longest running newspapers in Saskatchewan, and part of a publishing group that owns the Prince Albert Daily Herald, is closing its doors.
The Moose Jaw Times-Herald has announced it will publish its last edition on Dec. 7.
The newspaper has been around since 1889, almost 130 years.
The owner of the publication, Roger Holmes, was quoted by the Regina Leader Post as saying it was "a sad day," telling staff the paper was folding for economic reasons.
He told them, “the world has changed — there are things that we can control and things that we cannot control.”
Holmes and his Star News Publishing also owns the Prince Albert Herald, as well as several smaller weekly newspapers in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Holmes only purchased the Moose Jaw Times-Herald and Prince Albert Daily Herald as part of a large purchase of over a dozen papers from Transcontinental in May 2016.
Holmes did not say what the future holds for the Prince Albert daily.
The outlet was Green Zone member Darrel Davis’ first daily newspaper job. He told 650 CKOM it was a perfect size market to learn the trade.
“Every time you lose a newspaper, you lose some vibrancy in the city, in the community where you were, it’s horrible to think that the business is going that way,” Davis said.
He said it was a great city to make a career in and this news take a chip away from the city.
“Sure there’s other media, I understand that, but you always had the newspaper to supply the deeper context to a story and that’s why it’s always sad when you lose a newspaper,” Davis said.
He said the alumni that have gone through Moose Jaw, not only in the newspaper business but in the radio and TV business, is astounding.
