Sharks fall just short of first win vs. Rebels

Oct 23, 2017 | 12:00 PM

The game was well within their grasp, thanks to a stellar performance from goaltender Chloe Burt, but in the end, the AAA Battlefords Sharks couldn’t quite get into the win column on Sunday, as they dropped their second straight game to the Regina Rebels on the road, this time by a score of 2-1.

On Saturday, Regina defeated the Sharks 9-2.

Battlefords is now 0-8 to start the season, thanks to losses to Melville, Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina.

Burt made 41 saves on 43 shots in Sunday’s game, while rookie Sydney Rowley scored the lone goal. That goal tied the game halfway through the third period, but with under two minutes to go in the third period, Rebels leading scorer Ally Kosteniuk (the sister of Notre Dame Hounds forward and Lethbridge Hurricanes draft pick Zack Kosteniuk) scored a shorthanded goal to put Regina up 2-1.

The Sharks power play went 0-for-10 on Sunday, while their penalty kill went a perfect 6-for-6.

On Saturday, Sharks goaltender Haylie Biever had to leave the game with an injury before the first intermission after being run into by Regina defenceman Brooklyn Stevely. Stevely was given a minor penalty for goaltender interference. Burt came in to replace Biever. At the time, the score was 2-0 Rebels.

Forty-three seconds into the second, Celena Kissick scored to get the Sharks to within one but that was followed by four straight second period Regina goals. Madison Sansom scored the lone Shark goal of the third, while Regina added three more of their own to make the final 9-2.

Former Shark Chantel Weller got the win in goal for the Rebels.

The Sharks now have this coming weekend off, before they head to Weyburn the following weekend for two more games.
