Memorial golf fundraiser hits new high

Sep 24, 2017 | 9:15 PM

Junior golfers took to the course to support fellow children in need.

The second annual Brian Maunula Memorial Junior Golf Tournament took place Sunday and raised over $25,000 to benefit the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Tournament organizer Jaime Maunula was thrilled with the support in memory of her father-in-law Brian Maunula who passed away in February of 2016.

“We’re thrilled, these kids worked so hard. Our top three fund raisers all raised over $1,500 each,” she said.

A total of 61 young golfers took part, surpassing last year’s count of 48, and last year’s totals of roughly $18,000. Participants attended from the Battlefords and surrounding area, some even came from as far as Alberta.

Cruz Harrison, 7, from Maidstone, raised the highest amount at $1,980 through a combined effort of going door-to-door, asking local residents for support, and through Facebook with help from his dad Brett.

“I’m proud of him. I think it’s important for kids to do things like this for good causes, and they learn a lot doing it,” Cruz’s mother Jolyne Harrison said.

Kristina Konchak, director of major gifts with the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, said she appreciates everyone’s support.

“I love the fact that this has brought together so many families, friends and children to raise funds, and support pediatric health-care in our province,” she said. “We’re very excited to be able to put these funds towards pediatric equipment to help our kids in the province, as well as help build that children’s hospital.”
