Greyhound service to remain unchanged in Sask.

Greyhound buses will operate out of new locations in Saskatoon and Regina, but that’s about all that’s set to change.

Peter Hamel, Greyhound’s Western Canada director, spoke Tuesday with Saskatchewan Afternoon host David Kirton.

Hamel said the company still has no interest in buying the former Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) depots in either of Saskatchewan’s largest cities due to ongoing losses in the province.

“The ability to purchase these facilities and stuff like that, it’s just not there. It just does not make business sense in a declining market,” he said.

Greyhound will operate passenger and parcel services out of the Husky service station and restaurant at 315 Marquis Drive in Saskatoon.

In Regina, the company is finalizing arrangements to run passenger bus service out of the city’s airport. Hamel said they were still trying to find a location for parcel service, but could move to door-to-door service if no suitable facility can be found.

Hamel said Greyhound would remain focused on running buses along the Trans-Canada and Yellowhead highways crossing Saskatchewan, with no plans to add any new routes that were previously served by STC.

“We looked at the feasibility and the viability of maintaining or picking up some of these other corridors. But they just didn’t make business sense. And you can see that’s the reason why STC had to make their decisions,” he said.
