North Stars make moves ahead of coaching announcement

Aug 8, 2017 | 2:50 PM

A new coaching staff will finally be announced at the Civic Centre on Wednesday morning, but the lack of a general manager didn’t stop the Battlefords North Stars from making a couple of moves in late July and early August.

It appears both moves, made by assistant general manager Wylie Riendeau, were intended to make the North Stars tougher, as they obtained Keith Anderson and Tre Doyon in seperate moves.

On July 26, they acquired Doyon from the Lloydminster Bobcats in exchange for a player development fee.

Doyon is a 1998-born forward (he has two years of eligibility left) who stands 5’9″ but is no stranger to the rough stuff. He posted 99 penalty minutes in 47 games last season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for the Bobcats and recorded two fights. In 2015-16, he had 81 penalty minutes in 30 games for the AAA midget Bobcats, where he was teammates with current North Star MacGregor Sinclair. The team won the Alberta midget championship that season and finished fourth at the Telus Cup.

This past weekend, the team also announced the acquisition of Anderson, a 6’4″ 20-year-old winger, from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, also in exchange for a player development fee.

Anderson brings 46 games of Western Hockey League experience with him, recording a total of 56 penalty minutes and six points in those games. He played three games in 2014-15, 33 in 2015-16 and 10 last year, split between Victoria and Everett.

The Hermiston, Ore. native also played 12 games with the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League last season and 29 games with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, also of the BCHL. In those 41 combined games, he recorded 12 points and 88 penalty minutes.

Anderson will be playing his last year of junior hockey this season.
