Sentencing hearings for La Loche school shooter start Tuesday

May 15, 2017 | 5:43 PM

The teen who pleaded guilty to murdering four people and injuring seven in La Loche last January will be appearing in court for sentencing hearings this week.

Proceedings will start at 9:30 am Tuesday, May 16 and run through until Friday, May 19.

In an interview today, Crown prosecutor Lloyd Stang confirmed that the Crown is going ahead with the application to have the accused sentenced as an adult. This is the first of two weeks of hearings, with the other scheduled June 13-16 in Meadow Lake.

“The plan is also to have the entire hearing broadcast on CCTV to the La Loche site,” Stang said. “It will be there for community access purposes.”

The teen, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has pleaded guilty to the first-degree murders of Marie Janvier and Adam Wood, as well as second-degree murder in the deaths of brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine, who were shot in their home. He also pleaded guilty to seven counts of attempted murder.

The hearings will be run by provincial court Judge Janet McIvor.

As reported last fall, the maximum youth term for first-degree murder is 10 years in custody. An adult receives an automatic life sentence and, under a new provision for multiple murders, can receive consecutive periods of parole ineligibility of up to 25 years for each victim.
