BBBS thrilled with Wiffle Weekend

May 9, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Officials with the Battlefords Branch of Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) were thrilled with the turnout for the third annual Wiffle Weekend tournament played this past weekend at the Battleford Arena, and plans are already in the works for next year’s event.

“With everything going on this weekend in the Battlefords we were pretty excited about the turnout,” Renee Sparling, Program Coordinator for BBBS said. “We had six teams play on Saturday and five teams showed up on Sunday and everyone had a great time.”

Wiffle ball is a hybrid game which combines slo-pitch softball, dodge ball and kick ball. The game is played with plastic balls and bats.

While the final numbers have not been calculated, Sparling believes the fundraising total may have doubled last year’s amount.

“Last year’s Wiffle Weekend [raised] $2,500 and we know that we will be close to the $5,000 mark this year,” Sparling noted. “These funds will help us run more programs with Big Brothers, Big Sisters.”

According to Sparling, the summer months will be busy for the organization as they will be partnering with other groups in the area for youth-oriented programs.

“This will benefit the Littles (Little Brothers and Sisters) who are on the waiting list,” Sparling added. “It will give them an opportunity to do fun activities with other children throughout the summer.”

BBBS currently has a waiting list of 12 boys and girls in the area.
