McHappy Day: Helping families for 24 years

May 1, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Since 1977, McDonalds’ McHappy Day has raised more than $56 million for Canadian children.

Meanwhile for 24 of those 40 years, the Battlefords McDonalds restaurant has joined more than 1,400 locations across Canada to celebrate the occasion, which provides donations for the Ronald McDonald House —a home away from home for families each year while their children heal in hospital.

“I’m so happy we can make this happen in our area,” local McDonalds manager Sharon Taylor said as she and her staff put the finishing touches on the schedule of events for this Wednesday’s McHappy Day. “The community has been so supportive every year whether it’s the celebrities who show up and help or the customers who join us to support McHappy Day. We are very grateful.”

On McHappy Day this Wednesday $1 from every Big Mac, Happy Meal or hot McCafe beverage sold will go to the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon.

“One hundred per cent of all the proceeds that we raise will go to the Ronald McDonald House,” Taylor added. “We will have celebrities on hand selling merchandise, face painting and children’s activities as well. It really will be a fun day.”

Saskatoon’s Ronald McDonald House opened in 1985. With support from communities throughout the province, it has helped thousands of families throughout the years.

To give locals a better idea of how the charity helps,Taylor noted this week’s event will have a local family on hand for members to share their experiences.

“It’s been proven that a child in hospital heals faster when they have their family close by and that’s what Ronald McDonald House is all about,” Taylor said. “The house has 34 rooms now and that means we can assist 34 families at any given time.

CJNB’s Grant Schutte and Q98’s Nic Fransoo will broadcast live from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. from McDonalds on Railway Ave. on McHappy Day this Wednesday.
