BBBS wiffle weekend tournament returns to Battlefords

Apr 19, 2017 | 2:00 PM

What do you get when you combine slow pitch, dodge ball, kick ball and a plastic bat and ball?

“A whole lot of fun,” said Renee Sparling, Program Coordinator for Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) Battlefords Branch as she announced the third annual Wiffle Weekend Tournament coming to the Battleford Arena on May 6 and 7.

“Wiffleball is played like slow pitch however you use a plastic bat and ball so it’s harder to hit and you can bounce the ball off the boards, the glass or the net in the arena,” Sparling added. “Plus like dodgeball once you catch the ball you can get tagged out by tagging the runner with the ball.”

The Wiffle Weekend Tournament was a huge success last year for BBBS with teams from all over competing including a team from Saskatoon.

“Everyone we spoke to about hosting another tournament was so excited about participating,” Sparling said. “We do have room for just a few more teams however we are expecting those spots to fill up soon.”

Sparling said the tournament can accommodate 14 teams. Last year the event raised close to $2,500 for the organization.

Another highlight of the event will be the pancake breakfast on Sunday, May 7 beginning at 9:30 a.m.

“The pancake breakfast is open to the public and is just five dollars per person,” Sparling said. “All funds raised from the whole weekend will go to support the programs of Big Brothers Big Sisters.”

If you would like to register a team or as an individual for the third annual BBBS Wiffle Weekend Tournament check out their Facebook page or drop by the office for more details.
