Father Daughter Gala coming back for a second year

Mar 21, 2017 | 12:00 PM

A night dedicated to the special bond between fathers and daughters is coming to the Battlefords for a second year in a row.

After its success last year, the local Rotary club has brought back its Father Daughter Gala.

The formal event will have cocktails, mock-tails, supper, a candy bar, a silent auction and a comedian as some of its highlighted features.

The comedian, Kelly Taylor, is one of Canada’s few age-appropriate acts according to Mike Aimoe, one of the Father Daughter Gala’s committee members.

“He is one of the few comedians in Canada who can do a show for all ages,” Aimoe said. “That`s important because people think you get a comedian … he can be [raunchy] but he can do it for young kids all the way up to older kids and make them laugh.”

The gala itself it appropriate for all ages as well he said, as the night sees both the young and the old.

“If they’re old enough to be able to sit at a table and eat a nice meal they can come to the event,” he said. “Last year we had daughters ranging from as young as four years old all the way up to, I think there was a daughter there that was 70.”

The night is for fathers and daughters, but fathers and daughters of all varieties are welcome.

“Fathers in laws can bring daughters, I’ve seen grandparents bring granddaughters, similar premise,” he said. “It’s a father daughter evening.”

When it comes to his own daughter, Aimoe said sometimes there are fewer things he can bond with her over compared to his sons, and the night is a way to spend time together.

“It’s just a neat way to having a bonding time between a father and daughter because there are not really a lot of opportunities for fathers and daughters to bond,” he said. “This just gives me an opportunity to spend some quality time with my daughter and I’m hoping other people feel the same.”

Funds raised from the evening will go towards the Rotary Club, which contributes to the community including a recent donation to the Humane Society’s new building fund, and funding the Backpacks for Kids project that sent 60 backpacks to social services.

The event is being held at the Tropical Inn, starting at 5:30 pm on March 31.
