M.L. officer steps up after dog was thrown from moving vehicle

One Meadow Lake RCMP officer went above the call of duty for a dog after it was thrown from a moving vehicle last month.

The officer, who wishes to remain anonymous, took in the malnourished animal and nursed it back to health following the incident on Feb. 18.

“A lady came and said she witnessed a puppy thrown from a moving vehicle,” Sgt. Ryan How said. “From what the members said she [was] quite hysterical and upset at what she saw. She spoke to the male, and yet, he gave her a response that he really didn’t care what happened to the dog.”

The dog, named Ru, didn’t appear to be injured after it was thrown, but How said the animal appeared malnourished and so thin its bones were visible. How said when he last saw the dog on March 9, Ru was much healthier and happier.

According to him, stepping in to help animals is something not uncommon for police in the area.

“Unfortunately not, it’s not uncommon at all,” he said. “Even members that are seeing animals just wandering around and aren’t specifically being abused, but they’re malnourished or not looked after, the members are pretty quick to look after them and make sure they’re adopted and do a good job, or [they] look after them themselves.”

He said the officers know how taxed shelters in the area can be, and take it upon themselves to help out.

“They’ve been pretty quick to step in and look after these animals,” he said. “Generally on their own cost and on their own time as well to make sure that the animals are removed from these houses. There’s been a couple over the winter here where charges have been laid and this is just the latest incident of that. “

A 36-year-old male from Flying Dust First Nation was arrested following the incident, and is facing a charge of causing suffering to an animal. Ru, has since found a new home.
