Playground approved for West Battleford

Jan 26, 2017 | 1:00 PM

Construction for the long awaited Battleford West Playground will start as early as this summer.

At the latest town council meeting, members approved the recommendation from Jordan Schechtel, Parks and Recreation Department Head, to include the playground in the 2017 capital budget.

The town already has $25,000 of funding to put towards the project, approved for a grant from the CIF Community Places and Spaces Program, as long as the playground is completed by December of 2018.

With the playground projected to cost $100,000, the town would be on the hook for the remaining $75,000.

Schechtel said because of the number of inquires about the project over the years from both residents and developers he recommends work begin this upcoming summer.

“It would be nice to get started on that park and hopefully, maybe in 2018 we can move forward with the irrigation and grass and all that sort of thing as well,” Schechtel said.

So far there hasn’t been an exact location set aside for the playground as the town is hoping to include a hockey rink on the same lot in the future. Schechtel pointed out they will need some creative design to fit both venues on the same space.
