N.B. Festival of Trees to raise money for palliative care unit

Nov 28, 2016 | 4:00 PM

North Battleford is going to “get lit” at the annual Festival of Trees this weekend.

The Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation’s festival kicks off Friday with the “Let’s Get Lit” opening night, where guests will be treated to entertainment, food and the tree-lighting.

Funds from the festival, which runs Friday, Dec. 2 to Thursday, Dec. 8 at the Dekker Centre, will go to the palliative care unit this year.

“Each year we commit our different fundraising events to raise money for specific departments within the Battlefords Union Hospital and Battlefords Region Home Care, and this year funds are designated to ceiling lifts for our palliative care units,” foundation executive director Claudette McGuire said.

Ceiling lifts help patients lift themselves up and move around.

There are a variety of events throughout the week of the festival to give residents the opportunity to support the BUH Foundation.

After the opening night, there is a formal evening with a Kentucky Derby theme on Saturday.

“A lot of the ladies and gentlemen will be coming dressed like they were going to the Kentucky Derby,” McGuire said. “You get to view all the items, there’s live entertainment, it’s a very elegant evening.”

Sunday’s event is geared toward kids, with pancakes, face painting and pictures with Santa Claus.

The festival wraps up on Thursday with the Christmas High Tea, which will feature a traditional high tea menu.

Attendees can bid on auction items on display, buy raffle tickets and purchase bird houses throughout the festival, including at public viewings on Dec. 5 and 6.
