Sych named defenceman of the week

Oct 12, 2016 | 12:00 PM

North Stars defenceman Connor Sych has been named the SJHL defenceman of the week.

Sych was given recognition based on his strong performance in Saturday’s win over Flin Flon, the second in two nights, where he was originally credited with two goals and an assist. The stats have since been adjusted to just one goal and one assist but that doesn’t take away from his impressive game.

In fact, he was just as strong in Friday night’s win despite a lack of points, helping the North Stars kill off a penalty in overtime by blocking shots against the Bombers to force a shootout. Eventually, Kendall Fransoo won the game with a goal in the fourth round.

Sych has two goals and three assists in 11 games so far this season, but the stats don’t tell the whole story.

He plays big minutes every night, moves the puck quickly out of his zone and his shot on the power play has been invaluable. The team often uses his one-timer on the man advantage, but perhaps more important is his ability to get quick wrist shots to the net through traffic to create rebounds.

The 6’4” defenceman from North Battleford has been paired with Captain Kendall Fransoo for the last few games, a pair that has helped the North Stars win four straight games.

Last season, Sych had 35 points in 54 games, and he will look to build on that this season.
