Canadian Cancer Society to teach N.B. how to cook to prevent cancer

Local experts will be teaching the Battlefords how to live a healthier lifestyle and spice up their meals to prevent cancer.

An event in North Battleford Saturday afternoon hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society will give people tips on how to create dishes that are healthier and how to be more active.

“The Canadian Cancer Society really just wants to encourage folks to adopt a healthier lifestyle, even if it means just making one single change in their life,” cancer control coordinator Diana Ng said.

Dietician and fitness expert Dallas Odgers from Crossfit North Battleford will give a healthy lifestyle talk and Ng said Kihiw Restaurant executive chef Jesse Bosman will teach people how to create tasty dishes that are healthy and packed with flavour.

He’ll highlight how to use different herbs and spices with cancer-fighting properties instead of salt, because Ng said ongoing research shows a high use of salt is linked to stomach cancer.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society one third of cancers could be prevented by eating well and being active. Ng said if you count other preventable factors, such as smoking, 50 per cent of cancer cases could be prevented.

“There’s a lot that each and every one of us can do to live a healthier lifestyle to reduce our cancer risk,” she said.

The Spice up your Life event is Saturday, Oct. 8 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the NationsWest Field House in North Battleford.
