Country concert boosts support for Sask. talent

There’s a strong push to buy local, to support local farmers and buy Canadian made cars. But what about supporting local talent?

The Saskatchewan Country All Stars show at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford Saturday Sept. 17 hoped to do exactly that.

Brock Andrews, a musician who sits on the director’s board of the Saskatchewan Country Music Association, said the show was designed to give local musicians a boost.

“You support a local plumber so why not a musician?” Andrews said. “Our goal is to create strong branding that tells everyone there’s legit Saskatchewan talent in this province. Everyone should know these names. We’re on their radios all the time and playing local shows.”

It was the only show Andrews has planned for the Dekker Centre this year, but said he’d like to expand as much as possible.

“I didn’t want to bring it anywhere else but the Dekker Centre,” he said.

He said funding and sponsors have already been secured to keep the All Stars show in North Battleford for years to come.

Earlier in the day Andrews, along with Sask. Singers Jay Semko and Brody Siebert, played for an hour at the Discovery Co-op in North Battleford.

Semko has been nominated for eight Juno Awards and composed the music for the Canadian show Due South.
