Weyburn’s Brett Jones makes NFL debut

Weyburn product Brett Jones made his NFL debut for the New York Giants on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Jones won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award with the Calgary Stampeders in 2014 and signed with the New York Giants in 2015.

His NFL career didn’t get off to a smooth start, however, as he sat out the entire 2015-16 NFL season due to a knee injury.

After making the roster during training camp, Jones was able to achieve his dream when he suited up for the 2016 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Jones’ mother, Cheryl Roundy, was at the game in Dallas and described seeing her son in a NFL jersey as “pinch me moment.”

Football wasn’t the only career path for Jones, who studied engineering at the University of Regina.

“We were sort of told, ‘Well, you could always be an engineer, but you can’t always be a football player,’” Roundy said.

“So I think he thought if there was at least a hope, he would pursue that and we supported him.”

After the game, Roundy was able to see the emotion on her son’s face after reaching his goal.

“He was just beaming, as we all were,” Roundy said.

The Giants won the game 20-19.
