Another school year ahead for Light of Christ

Aug 31, 2016 | 6:00 AM

School is almost once again in session for students attending Catholic schools in the Battlefords and in the northwest.

Elementary students in the Light of Christ Catholic Schools Division are going back to school on Thursday, Sept. 1 with registration for students attending John Paul II Collegiate happening on the same day. John Paul II students will begin classes on Friday, Sept. 2.

Director of Education, Corey Rideout is entering his third year in the position with Light of Christ and said this term marks a new beginning.

“The nice thing about education is that we get to start fresh every year and I look forward to it,” Rideout said. “For me, even when I was in the classroom, I loved the start of the school year so I’m excited about this school year.”

According to Rideout, school infrastructure is doing pretty well going into this year and in addition, Light of Christ purchased the old Knights of Columbus Hall in North Battleford.

Rideout said renovations will be happening on the hall with some early plans in mind.

“Our plan around that is to use that hall for professional development opportunities, places for our schools to do things like Christmas concerts or maybe a commercial cooking type of situation if the John Paul students want to use it for that,” he said.

The school board spent the past week going over the strategic plan for the district, which includes the district’s guidelines, goals and principles for the next five years. Rideout said the plan took all of last year to complete and they are proud of the work put into it.

“We went to our parishes, we went to our staff, our students, our parents, and our school-based admin. Ended up having over 200 pages of data actually and from that feedback our board took into everything into account and came up with what I believe is a very tight plan,” he said.

Rideout added he wishes the members of the district the best and is looking for a great start to the school year.
