Province commits to programs, funding in La Loche

Premier Brad Wall made the trip to La Loche this morning, to communicate the provincial government remains committed to providing additional support to the community, which faced a tragic shooting at the beginning of the year.

“Since the terrible events of last January, the people of La Loche have inspired us with their resilience, unity and optimism,” Wall said in a press release. “Our government promised to support the community as it recovers and today we continue to meet that commitment.”

With Wall’s announcement came several commitments to new initiatives and investments, including:

  • A 14-unit affordable rental housing project with $1.4 million contributed from the provincial and federal governments.
  • Two new training programs which will offer Adult Basic Education programs at the Dumont Technical Institute and Northlands College. The college will also offer a Tri-Trades program in heavy equipment, truck and transport and automotive mechanics. The Ministry of Economy has invested $465,000 in the programs.
  • A four-year Dene Teacher Education training program for local university students to teach local students as part of a partnership between the Ministries of Advanced Education and Education along with the First Nations University of Canada. The province will commit $480,000 to half the program’s costs. The school division and First Nation will pay the remainder.
  • A school plan for the Northern Lights School Division to improve outcomes for students. The Ministry of Education is working in partnership.
  • An additional community mental health nurse to provide counseling and 24/7 on-call service, along wtih a suicide prevention worker/community wellness worker scheduled to start work later this month.
  • A second full-time victims services co-ordinator along with a community justice co-ordinator, funded by the Ministry of Justice.
  • An official community plan for La Loche, completed by Government Relations.
