Midget Beavers to take on Seniors in exhibition baseball game

Aug 3, 2016 | 10:00 AM

An exhibition game has been set up between the midget and senior baseball teams in North Battleford for some more action on the diamond and a tune-up for the younger squad.

On Thursday Aug. 4, the North Battleford Midget Beavers will be facing their NSRBL Senior Beaver counterparts in a game which is one part exhibition, one part tune-up for 2016 Western Canada Championships.

Coach of the Midget Beavers Mike Hudec said the game between the two teams had been in the works for a while, a time was just never found.

“We’d been trying to organize an exhibition game throughout the season but the Senior Beavers were busy with their season and of course we were busy with our season and playoffs,” Hudec said. “Now that their season’s done and we’re in between provincials and Western Canadians, we thought it would be a good time to keep our boys sharp with a game and have some fun.”

Despite the age difference between some of the players on each of the teams and it being an exhibition game for fun, Hudec said the seriousness won’t be lost on the two teams.

“It’ll still be taken seriously enough because as I said before, we’re still tuning up for Western Canadians and we want our pitchers sharp and we want to still make good plays. So there will definitely be a competitive edge to the game,” he said.

After the game with the Senior Beavers, the Midget Beavers will be at the 2016 Western Canada Championships in St. Albert, Alta. from Aug. 12 to 14.

“It’s a new thing for all of the players really, to make it this far and to be able to represent Saskatchewan against teams from B.C., Alberta and Manitoba. So there’s a lot of excitement and we’re going to prepare hard for it and go there to do our best,” Hudec said.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Lions Stadium. The two teams have turned it into a charity event where the price of admission is a donation to the Battlefords Food Bank.
