Oil spill causes change in N.B. UPAR project timelines

The oil spill in the North Saskatchewan River and the resulting restrictions have the City of North Battleford changing its Underground Pipeline and Asphalt Replacement (UPAR) program schedule.

UPAR work on 105th St. from 11th Ave. to 12th Ave. has been postponed indefinitely due to the oil spill. The project was scheduled to begin on Aug. 15 and involved the replacement of pipes directly connected to the city water tower.

Communications Co-ordinator Susanne Abe said the 105th St. project was put on hold because the City didn’t want to take those water tower lines out of service during the water shortage.

“With the shortage of potable water right now, we decided to determine that (postpone the project),” Abe said. “It’s too important so that we (don’t) take those lines out of service.”
