Fountain in Central Park to be removed and replaced with concrete slab

The fountain downtown is an eye sore but it couldn’t be renovated even if the city wanted to.

City council has decided the fountain in North Battleford’s Central Park will be torn down to make way for a stamped concrete slab.

Bill Samborksi, director of leisure services, said a new fountain couldn’t be installed due to recent construction in the area.

“The reason there will be no new fountain is because when… the street water main (was redone) on 101st St. the water was turned off to the fountain and wasn’t reconnected,” Samborski said. “This is a nice alternative.”

Rough drawings of what the slab will look like portray it as circular with a star stamped in the middle and three hedges placed to one side.

Council also suggested flooding the area in the winter to make an ice park. The idea has been put on the back burner because without proper drainage ice could cause severe damage to the concrete.

The cost for the project is $87,000 which will be covered by the $89,000 Discovery Coop Community Spaces grant.

Construction is set to begin in August.
