Active seniors the stars of 55+ Provincial Games

Keeping seniors active and coming together to compete is the focus of the 55+ Provincial Games.

As of opening ceremonies Tuesday evening, the Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness Association’s (SSFA) 55+ Provincial Games are officially underway in the Battlefords.

It’s rewarding seeing all the participants come together at the games, President of the SSFA, Margaret Gailing, said.

“It makes the whole process exciting and I’m glad to see so many people starting to, and continue to, be involved in physical activity,” she said.

Gailing said physical activity is important for seniors and the 55+ games has become an anticipated tradition for many.

Gailing added the participants in these games are still very competitive and winning is a source of pride for them.

“I recall several years ago there was a competition, I believe it was in Weyburn, and it was a slo-pitch team that won the bronze and this gentleman said to me ‘You know, I’ve watched my children, my grandchildren receive medals but I’ve never received one.’ He was so proud of it.”

Competitions continue to take place throughout July 6 and July 7 at various locations around the Battlefords.
