Battlefords U12 bats get ready to swing at provincials

Jul 5, 2016 | 7:00 PM

Provincial softball glory is up for grabs this weekend in the Battlefords as six teams play for the right to be named champion.

The Battleford Bandits host the 2016 Softball Saskatchewan U12 ‘B’ Girls Provincial Championships from Friday, July 8 to Sunday, July 10.

Bandits coach Regan Lavallee said her team is eager to play in provincials after their success this year.

“They got the taste of it in our last two tournaments winning gold, so we’re going into it with high expectations,” she said.

The Bandits will play the Moose Jaw Ice, the Watrous Royals, the Humboldt Thunder, the Saskatoon Hustler Hot Shots and the Melfort Spirit.

Lavallee said she feels they can put on a tournament as good as the ones hosted in larger cities.

“It’s good to see softball coming alive again in North Battleford,” she said. “I know there’s been people saying they’re excited to come to North Battleford to come to these provincials. It’s exciting to bring the teams here and see the diamonds that we have, because we have good softball diamonds.”

Lavallee admitted it would be great to win provincials on their home field. “We’re going to go out there and play our best and have fun and hope for the best,” she said.

The first game of the tournament is at 12 p.m. on Friday, July 8 between the Battleford Bandits and the Saskatoon Hustler Hot Shots.

All provincial games are being played at Battleford Flats Park.
