Street festival reaching out for more volunteers

Jul 5, 2016 | 5:00 PM

Willing to help make the 2016 North Battleford International Street Festival the best it can be? Festival organizers are looking for 15 to 20 people who can help make it another successful event.

Volunteer co-chair Alexis Christiansen said they need people willing to help clean up on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31, as well as answer questions and provide directions.

“Most of our volunteers have so far come back every year,” Christiansen said. “I think it’s actually enjoyable and you’ll usually see them around in their red shirts with big smiles.” Much of it is simply mingling with the crowd and enjoying the show, she explained.

Heading into its third year, the festival won the 2015 Saskatchewan Tourism Award of Excellence for Community Event of the Year. It features street performers showcasing a variety of talents, running the gamut from musicians to comedians, magicians, jugglers, dancers, contortionists and clowns.

“One thing is, we’ve made sure to grow every year…we have an extra three performers this year,” Christiansen said. “We also have some new food and artisan vendors coming in, as well as some of the favourites that come in every year.”

The festival will once again be located in Central Park next to the North Battleford Library.

Christianson explained the location turned out to be a hit after they were forced by a fire to move the 2015 festival there.

This is her third year working with the festival.

“It’s an opportunity to celebrate in our community, bring families together, people together in our community, and it’s a free event so it’s pretty hard not to come back every year and get behind that,” she said.

Admission to the street festival is free, but attendees are encouraged to pay the performers.
