N.B. Humane Society wins airtime award

Jul 4, 2016 | 1:16 PM

The local animal shelter is hoping a community award will help raise awareness about its cause and needs.

The Battlefords Humane Shelter won the community airtime award from the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and Norsask Farm Equipment. The award is a six month advertising campaign valued at nearly $120,000, granted twice a year to a local non-profit organization.

The Humane Society needs a new building and shelter coordinator Michelle Spark hoped the award will help with fundraising for it.

“We’re just hoping to get more community support out of it and raise some awareness to people that this is who we are, and this is what we do, and this is what we need,” she said.

Spark said the estimated cost of the new building alone is roughly $1.7 million and $500,000 has been raised so far. She said not only does the shelter need funds for the new building, but also to continue operations and maintain care of the animals there now.

The current building is small and overcrowded. Spark said there are also major ventilation, mould and structural issues.

She hoped the advertising campaign will also catch the attention of anyone willing to help out.

“We’re hoping it will raise awareness about needing volunteers and people to help with events, especially with us doing more fundraising now for the new building,” she said. “We’re always in need of volunteers, as well as foster homes for the animals that we have here.”
