Sask. government reviewing safety after toddler falls into septic tank in Maple Creek

The province is investigating how a toddler fell into a septic tank at a Tourism Saskatchewan rest stop in Maple Creek last week.

Richard Murray is Deputy Minister of Central Services for Saskatchewan and he said they are very thankful to hear that the little girl is going to be okay.

The girl’s mother said she has a gash on the back of her head along with scrapes and bruises and she is starting to get back to her normal self.

“We temporarily secured the hatch for the day and a new permanent hatch was installed over the weekend,” he said.

The government also sent a team out to Maple Creek to investigate exactly how this happened on that site. They are conducting interviews and taking pictures and Murray hopes to see an official report back by the end of this week.

“Determine whether the lid was damaged or rusted or fatigued or whatever the case may be, we just don’t want to pre-judge whatever may have happened,” Murray explained.

He said the province also launched a review of the safety measures in place around septic tanks at all 52 public rest stop sites they operate across the province. As of Tuesday, he said they were already three quarters of the way through the review and hoped to finish by the end of the week.

“Early indications are everything is safe and sound and secure so….thankfully this is probably a one-off unique situation that has been rectified,” Murray said.

When asked about the location and  relatively open access to the septic tank, he said in general they do need to be relatively close to public buildings, but hatchways must be properly secured.
