What to do in the Northwest during the Canada Day long weekend

With Canada Day approaching on Friday, there’s no shortage of events and activities across the northwest.

In the Battlefords, Fort Battleford is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m with opening ceremonies set for noon. Events throughout the day include historic games, tours of the fort and a barbecue. Fireworks end the celebrations at 10:45 p.m. with viewing sites back at the fort.

In Cut Knife, multicultural day runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the community centre. Cultural elements include woodworking, food and dance.

For those in the Unity area, Unity’s Annual Celebration of Canada Day goes from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Unity and District Heritage Museum. The day starts with breakfast and opening ceremonies including a flag raising and O Canada. Throughout the day, there’s a barbeque lunch, local entertainment, games, a supper and fireworks at dusk.

In Maidstone, the day kicks off with a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. with a parade beginning shortly after. Throughout the day there are a variety of activities including a slow pitch tournament, a double horseshoe tournament and children’s activities. Celebrations end with fireworks at 11 p.m.

In the Meota area, the Meota Regional Park is hosting Canada Day celebrations. At 10 a.m. children can participate in a bike decorating event followed by a parade of bikes around the campground. The farmers market starts at 9 a.m., a beer garden follows in the afternoon and ending with fireworks in the evening.

In Meadow Lake, the Pineridge Ford Amphitheatre Lions Park hosts a free concert and celebrations starting at 7 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for dusk. Celebrations will also be held at the Greig Lake day use area in Meadow Lake Provincial Park and in Dorintosh during a street dance Friday and Saturday.
