Council discusses memorializing a loved one with a tree

Residents of North Battleford may soon be able to plant a city tree in memory of a deceased loved one.

“I love the Idea of designating a place where people can buy memorial trees,” Councillor Ryan Bater said during a regular council meeting, June 20.

Coun. Don Burglas took the idea one step further. He explained a practice where cremated remains and tree seeds were put in a decomposable urn and planted. The idea behind is every death can birth new life.

North Battleford doesn’t have a memorial tree planting policy but has discussed it over the last several years. City staff’s research found trees range between $400 and $1,000 with an additional charge for a plaque.

“I like the idea of there being flexibility. People should be able to pick different types of trees within the confines of what will grow here.” Bater said.

Council suggested both the CUplex and the North Battleford Golf and Country Club as possible memorial locations. A policy will be drawn and presented at the next city council meeting.
