North Battleford’s lunch hours getting lively again

Jun 7, 2016 | 2:00 PM

North Battleford’s city centre will soon be filling with the sounds of local music and poetry.

Starting June 8, every second Wednesday a local artist will perform a live concert in the downtown park area as part of the Live at Lunch initiative, encouraging people to stay in the downtown during the lunch hour.

Lisa Kissick, executive director at the North Battleford Business Improvement District, said the third Live at Lunch has the largest and broadest bill of artists.

“Maybe you’ve never seen them before. Maybe you’ve never heard them before. It’s a really good chance to enjoy some of our outdoor venues downtown,” she said. “We’ve been amazed and fortunate over the past couple of years to find the most amazing local musicians and singers.”

The Live at Lunch movement was launched by the Business Improvement District in 2013 to help liven up the downtown area during the lunch hour and also build enthusiasm for the city centre park, which the district believed was being underutilized.

The first act in 2013 was a solo show, but Kissick said the popularity of the performance inspired them to make the event a more permanent fixture in the summer.

Every single genre of music has graced the stage at Live at Lunch, with music styles ranging from jazz to country, rock & roll to even lyric poetry.

Kissick said one of last year’s most popular bands to play at Live at Lunch –Pocket Aces –will headline the 2016 kickoff. There will also be a barbeque at the debut, with all of the proceeds going to the local boys and girls club, and food vendors at each performance.

“It helps get people in to the outdoor settings,” Kissick said, “and liven the summer up.”
