Unity and Biggar coordinators honoured at EMS awards

Two emergency medical service (EMS) professionals from Unity and Biggar were among those honoured this week at a provincial award ceremony for those who went above and beyond in their careers.

Unity ICP coordinator Leah Arsenault and Biggar EMS coordinator Doug Beeson both received Stars of Life Awards at the award ceremony in Regina on Monday, May 30 where Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield made the presentations.

The Star of Life Award recognizes going above and beyond the call of duty, excellence and leadership as well as program development and high standards of excellence in EMS.

Both Arsenault and Beeson work for the Heartland Health Region south of the Battlefords and were both nominated by members of the health region. Arsenault said it’s great to be recognized by the people she works with.

“It’s a pretty awesome feeling they would think highly enough of me to nominate me for this. It is feeling pretty nice to have it but it almost a little bit overwhelming, but very thoughtful and pleasing at the same time,” Arsenault said.

Beeson said it’s an honour to get a Star of Life Award and join those ranks of past EMS providers who also received the accolade.

“When you look at the company you’re included in over the years the people that have received them, those are some pretty incredible people. It is quite humbling to be included in that group.” Beeson said.

Both Arsenault and Beeson mentioned it was great to be recognized for the extra work they put into their job day in and day out.

“It is just a part of a job and I guess if you really like your job enough, I guess you’re just good at it and continue through with it.” Arsenault said.
