Fire ban lifted for portion of province but precautions remain for some areas

The Ministry of Environment has lifted the open fire ban for the Crown forest areas north of the Churchill River because of the recent rainfall. The lift on the ban was decided after environment staff consulted with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport and the Ministry of Government Relations. The area where the ban is rescinded is north of the Churchill River and the west side of the commercial forest, although other areas are most likely just as safe in the northerly regions.

Dennis Trueman, Provincial Fire Centre Manager of Prince Albert said it was a safe bet to lift the ban due to the cooler weather and rainfall over the May long weekend.

“Rain’s fallen over most of the parts of Saskatchewan. There are three active wildfires in Saskatchewan. The fire activity is moderated due to favourable weather,” Trueman said.

The government has removed restrictions on fires in The Battlefords, Candle Lake, Clearwater River, Lac La Ronge and Athabasca Sand Dunes provincial parks. However restrictions remain in place in Good Spirit Lake, Makwa Lake, and Meadow Lake provincial parks, which did not receive any rain. The ban also applies to Chitek Lake and Bronson Forest recreation sites. Those areas are still being watched closely by fire officials.

“We’re in to the fire season so if everybody could watch their fires, not leave them unattended and be sure they’re out before (you leave) the campsite,” Trueman added.

As for an end to the fire threats, Trueman said it was still too early to make any concrete decisions regarding whether or not the ban would be needed again.

“It’s an ongoing process,” he said. “As weather conditions change we try to make fairly consistent calls on the matter.”

Trueman recommends checking with the individual municipal authority before going out to any provincial park and building a fire.
