RCMP reminds public to lock up summer property

As cabin season approaches in Saskatchewan, local RCMP officers remind people to lock up their cabins, vehicles and other property while spending time at the lakes or parks.

The Battlefords RCMP has received complaints about outbuildings, cabins and vehicles being gone through and robbed at Jackfish and Murray Lakes.

Sgt. Jason Teniuk with the Battlefords Municipal General Investigation Section Unit said it comes with the time of year as people start to make their way to the cabins.

“Maybe something was broken in over the winter and they’re starting to see it now,” Teniuk said. “Or the people that shouldn’t be doing the things they’re doing are noticing people are coming up and they’re bringing food and other items and putting them in their cabins getting ready for the year, then leaving for the weekends.”

Teniuk said complaints have trickled in and officers are starting to take note.

“Until there’s more of a significant presence out at the lakes I think this may be an issue, for some time anyway. That increased activity doesn’t go unnoticed and it any event we want to make the public aware we have had complaints related to that,” he said.

As for preventative measures, it is the simple things people can do to make a big difference according to Tenuik.

“Just to ensure your vehicle is locked is huge, make your sure your cabin is locked. We’re not seeing a lot of damage going on in terms of breaking windows and stuff to get into things, but leave things out of view and lock your vehicle. That’s huge,” Tenuik said. “That will deter so much from happening. It makes things just better in general.”
