Big week for seeding numbers across northwest and central regions

May 12, 2016 | 1:10 PM

The warm and dry weather allowed a big jump in seeding across the northwestern, west-central and northeastern regions of the province.

In the northwestern region, 21 per cent of the crop is in the ground according to the crop report ending on May 9, compared to only three per cent the week before. In the west-central region, seeding is well underway. 26 per cent of the crop is in the ground compared to 6 per cent last week.

Both regions are well above the five-year average for this time of the year.

Little to no rain was received in either region last week, although the Hafford area of the northwestern region reported receiving four millimetres. Areas in the west-central received rain earlier this week which will help replenish topsoil moisture.

In the northeastern region, 23 per cent of the crop is in the ground up from only one per cent last week. Very little rainfall was received last week and the Prince Albert, Nipawin and Arborfield areas all reported 10 millimetres.

Farmers now have 35 per cent of the crop in the ground across the province, compared to the five-year seeding average of 10 per cent for this time of year.

The southwest region is leading the way with 58 per cent of the crop seeded. The southeast is in second with 51 per cent of the crop seeded followed by 26 per cent in the west-central region, 23 per cent in the northeast, 21 per cent in the northwest and 17 per cent in the east-central.
