North Stars’ Davidson commits to Concordia University

Rory Davidson’s junior hockey career came to a disappointing end with the Battlefords North Stars, but his playing days will continue. He has committed to Concordia University in Edmonton next season.

After being acquired from the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior League, the Delburne native used his speed to his advantage as he put up 18 points in 32 regular season games. He stepped up his game in the playoffs, scoring four goals and adding two assists in 10 games, despite a serious shoulder injury suffered in the opening round.

“It definitely hindered me a little bit but when it comes to playoffs, you have to put it all on the line and battle through,” Davidson said. “I have the summer to heal up and get ready for next year.”

Davidson said what grabbed his attention was the direction the program at Concordia is heading. There will be seven other freshmen starting with him for the Thunder in the 2016-17 season.

“They play on an Olympic-size ice, so they really liked my speed. It will give me more time and space to manoeuvre and make plays. They’re in a bit of a rebuilding phase right now,” Davidson said.

The Thunder play in the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association, which includes teams from Caronport, Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Lac La Biche and Camrose. There is also a team located in Fort McMurray.

Davidson will work towards a Bachelor of Science degree before studying for a career as a chiropractor.

“The thing I’ll remember most about my time (with the North Stars) is the group of guys,” Davidson said. “When I came there, I was pretty nervous walking into the dressing room but everyone greeted me with open arms. I became part of the family and there’s nothing better I could have asked for than that group of guys.”

Davidson finished his junior career appearing in 150 games with the Drumheller Dragons, Dauphin Kings and Battlefords North Stars, scoring 31 goals and 27 assists. He also won back to back midget AAA national titles with the Red Deer Chiefs in 2012 and 2013.
