Antelope chased, hit and killed by dirt bike driver near Paynton: RCMP

May 2, 2016 | 5:08 PM

A man from Little Pine First Nation faces charges after allegedly running down and killing a pronghorn antelope with his dirt bike Friday.

Maidstone RCMP got a tip about a green dirt bike that chased down the animal, hit it several times and killed it south of Paynton.

The witness who called police said the animal was taken to the Little Pine First Nation, 20 kilometres south each of Paynton.

The antelope carcass was found and a man from the community was arrested.

He’s charged with causing unnecessary suffering or harm to an animal under the Criminal Code. RCMP said no name will be released at this time.

Wildlife Federation director Darrell Crabbe said they hear at least one similar story a year, usually involving snowmobiles.

“It would indicate to me a complete lack of respect for wildlife and common sense,” he said.

“It’s really hard for me and probably every ethical hunter to even comprehend why someone would do that.”
