UPDATE: More fire bans issued due to dry conditions

Apr 19, 2016 | 5:20 PM

Rural municipalities Redford and Mervin were added to the list of communities with firebans today, April 20, a day after the city of North Battleford along with the Rural Municipality were placed under the same ban.

Due to dry and windy conditions a ban was issued on open-air burning in agricultural fields and on lawns. Gas barbecue’s and fire pits are still allowed, however there are some steps to take if you decide to use a fire pit:

Never leave a fire pit unattended

Have an adequate supply of water to put out or control the flames

Always properly extinguish the fire after use

Pay attention to wind conditions and potential spark hazards

The fire department is also advising residents to keep vegetation and combustibles away from buildings. Don’t use any equipment that creates flames or sparks, be careful discarding cigarettes and ashes and if you see any suspicious activities or suspected fire starts call the RCMP.

Fines for violating a fire ban start in the range of a few hundred dollars and can reach $1,000.

Across north-west Saskatchewan, fire bans have also been put into effect in the rural municipalities of Battle River, Paynton, Cut Knife, and Medstead.
