Election 2016: Familiar faces returning to legislature for Battleford Mayor

Apr 5, 2016 | 12:31 PM

It’s a sense of familiarity for the mayor of Battleford after Monday’s election.

SaskParty leader Brad Wall is returning for another term as premier, along with Herb Cox and Larry Doke returning as MLAs for the Battlefords and Cut Knife-Turtleford respectively.

“We’ve had a number of correspondence with Mr. Cox over the past number of months and obviously Mr. Doke and the other fellows that are nearby. Familiarity is there and we’ve worked together on a number of files, moving forward will be continuing to work with these individuals.” said Mayor Derek Mahon.

He added there isn’t much he is expecting right away from the government based on the campaign promises.

“There was not a lot of promises made, it was a stay the course, move forward (campaign). There’s definitely some economic issues with the price of oil, so maybe there’s not as many dollars around to spread around. But as we move forward we’ll see what happens.”

With the SaskParty remaining in government, the plan to privatize 40 liquor stores is going to be followed through on, including the one located in Battleford. Mahon said it remains to be seen what the process will have to be in changing the public store into a private one, as he doesn’t entirely know how it will be moving forward.
