4th International Women’s Day in the Battlefords

Mar 4, 2016 | 6:07 AM

Battlefords residents are banding together to support women.

Hundreds of people are expected at the United Church on Third Avenue, to celebrate International Women’s day on Friday, March 4.

The Battlefords Family Health Centre and Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre are putting on a lunch and fundraiser for the fourth year in a row.

The event is a celebration of women said organizer Carla Pattinson.

“The fundraiser is just a silver collection and the lunch is free of charge. We just want to spread awareness of women’s issues and to celebrate women first of all.”

Pattinson spoke about what they are hoping to achieve and the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day.

“This year’s theme is Push for Parity. A recognition that women in Canada have many opportunities that those in other areas don’t have but in spite of those opportunities we do need to recognize that we’re not quite equal,” she said.

Pattinson wants to celebrate what women have accomplished but also knows they have a long way to go.

“Whenever you have issues of poverty it’s often centred around woman and among single-parent families headed by women. Yet there’s many opportunities. Some of our displays will showcase to women what opportunities and what supports are out there.”

Pattinson is hoping that women will be able to tap into those supports if they need them.

“When women do better in a community the entire community does better.”

There will be two guest speakers at the event. Eleonore Sunchild of Sunchild Law, a First Nations woman, who works with First Nations people on residential school cases.

The other speaker is Jouzay Pruden, who will be doing a dramatic reading and challenging women to think about how they contribute to their communities and what else they can do.

Pattinson is expecting 150-175 people to come by, donning the colour purple.

“Some just come for the lunch because they are working and some come early and stay the whole time. We are encouraging everyone to wear purple. Purple is the colour of the day,” she said.

Donating money isn’t mandatory and people are allowed to donate as much or as little as they can afford. The event begins at 10 a.m.
