Students return to school in La Loche

Feb 24, 2016 | 1:22 PM

Both the school division and the community of La Loche are working to ensure safety as high school students prepare to return to school Friday, Feb. 26.

Kids were back in class Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Ducharme Elementary School.

There are now only three entrances at the elementary school, down from nine.

Renovations are underway in the main entrance and office area of the Dene High School building to remove anything that could trigger memories of last month’s shootings.

For students who are not comfortable returning to the school, two satellite classrooms have been set up. Counsellors have been put on staff with extra available if needed.

At a press conference Wednesday, Feb. 23, it was announced that all teachers are back and eager to get back to work. 12 additional staff will help with the transition the next few weeks.

On Jan. 22 an armed youth opened fire in the Dene High School killing two and injuring several. Two other victims were killed at a private residence allegedly by the same shooter.
