New phone scam sweeping the Battlefords

Jun 25, 2016 | 3:55 PM

Battleford RCMP is notifying the public of a new kind of phone fraud scam.

RCMP received a complaint of a caller claiming to be from the fraud department of a major credit card company. The caller claimed to be calling to confirm a recent online purchase.

Though the request at first sounded valid, the caller also sought personal information from the victim, such as the number of the credit card to ‘verify’ the information.

On this occasion, no information was provided to the caller. The caller became silent and hung up the phone on the victim.

RCMP are advising people, should they receive this type of call and believe it is legitimate, to call their credit card back using the phone number on the back of the credit card. From there, it is safe to follow proper reporting procedures.
