Amalgamation issue discussed again at town council

Jun 7, 2016 | 6:38 PM

Battleford and North Battleford amalgamating into one town was once again on the table at a brief Battleford Town council meeting.

Battleford mayor Derek Mahon brought up the hot-button issue Monday, June 6, and said he’d received no notifications from townspeople to look into the merge, or to have their voices heard.

“Everyone is always interested in saving money, but as far as studying amalgamation, a lot of comments I’ve received is ‘we’re not in favour of it.’”

He said should interest grow, the town would not be opposed to looking into the logistics of amalgamation.

The other major issue was the provincial budget cuts to River Valley Park.

“It was a surprise I guess,” Mahon said. “There was a five year agreement signed with the money being available on a yearly basis. It’s unfortunate, but with a billion dollars less than what was in the budget last year, cuts need to be made.”

He did say the issue would be under review and brought up again at the next meeting on Monday, June 13, so the possibility of park funding returning could still be up in the air.

As well, councillor Susan McLean Tady reported Battleford’s 2016 tourism week was better attended than the previous year.

Councillor Gordon Yarde said the rising popularity of the River Valley Campgrounds was noticeable, and Mahon commented on the large crowds the Fred Light Museum’s heritage days displays had drawn.

“The history of Battleford is well-documented there. Many thanks to the staff who took the time to put those displays together,” Mahon said.
